Hello, and welcome to the Jack Said What family of companies…

Jack Said What family

JACK SAID WHAT

Jack Said What was founded in the summer of 2022, and started releasing a slew of quality music from the off. Quickly establishing itself with early media and DJ support, the maverick imprint has settled into the firmament of dependable labels releasing forward-thinking, kick-ass, underground electronic dance music.

Mary Anne Hobbs premiered the very first release on her 6Music radio show — the Italo-tinged ‘Ear Racer’ by Serge Santiago. Other subsequent JSW radio support has come from the likes of Sarah Story, Danny Howard, Arielle Free, Chris Hawkins, Lauren Laverne, Jo Whiley, Gary Crowley, Craig Charles, MistaJam, and the late great Annie Nightingale.

Random significant JSW events have included: Laurent Garnier using Martin Badder & MARIA’s street-real breakbeat anthem ’No Two Ways About It’ to kick off his recent Fabric mix CD; Marshall Jefferson giving Jack Said What a track to release under his On The House moniker with legendary Chicago vocalist Curtis McClain; snagging an early single from acclaimed vocalist Antony Szmierek before he was famous; releasing an album by celebrated UK DJ/producer Jon Carter after more than a decade away from the scene; amazing Chicago soulful vocalist Robert Owens guesting on albums by JSW mainstay Steve Mac and Back To Basics legend Dave Beer; Irvine Welsh talking about the label on BBC Radio 4; persuading Arthur Brown to clear a sample of his 1969 No.1 ‘Fire’ for a release by new young producer Luca LeBleu; an infamous Jack Said What takeover of the i360 pod at BMC in Brighton; securing house music legend Chip-E from Chicago for not one but two single releases; Chad Jackson following up his hip-house classic ‘Hear The Drummer Get Wicked’ with ‘Get Wicked’ for Jack Said What; house music queen Rowetta giving us a sweet track to release; working with underground house DJ Nickelle on her first release on a UK label; and lots lots more.

Every week something new happens.

OUT YER BOX

Out Yer Box is the sister label to Jack Said What, focusing on more left-of-centre material. So while JSW focuses principally on house and techno for the dancefloor, if it’s non-4/4 music, then it fits within the OYB remit.

Quality releases so far — from Third Bloom, EVL Tom, Scott Booth, Lisa Moorish, Martin Badder, Pattern Perception, Corserine, Renude19 and more – have ably demonstrated this.

Random significant OYB events so far have included: Lauren Laverne premiering Lisa Moorish’s return to the fray after 20 years, her Sylvia Plath paean ’Sylvia’, on her BBC 6Music breakfast show; Third Bloom starring in the label’s first ever live showcase in Brighton; Scott Booth releasing an electronic music album made solely using his deft guitar work; David Holmes submitting a rare remix for the imprint; the Allen Ginsberg foundation granting permission for Renude19 to use the celebrated beat poet’s legendary Howl opus in their ‘Reimagining Allen Ginsberg’ album; Pattern Perception becoming a mainstay of Chris Hawkins’s BBC 6Music show, after he famously rechristened the Midlander “Dave from Birmingham” (PP is actually from Tipton, nine miles outside of Birmingham); Out Yer Box events featuring DJs such as EVL Tom, Mini Da Minx, Carl Loben, Sarah Monument, the Glitter Bosher, Drum Monkeys and more; Martin Badder & MARIA’s ‘No Two Ways About It’ being licensed for Laurent Garnier’s recent Fabric mix; and lots more.
