Out Yer Box is the sister label to Jack Said What, focusing on more left-of-centre material. So while JSW focuses principally on house and techno for the dancefloor, if it’s non-4/4 music, then it fits within the OYB remit.
The name Out Yer Box refers to music that you might not include in your rekordbox files as a DJ, if you’re playing at house or techno nights. Although you might play some OYB tunes out at other kinds of music events, for sure, or sync them to a film. Who knows? This means that OYB material can include any of the following styles: dubstep, breakbeat, dub, alternative pop, ambient, folktronica, jungle/drum & bass, Balearic, indie-electro, and a myriad other styles.
Quality releases so far — from Third Bloom, EVL Tom, Scott Booth, Lisa Moorish, Martin Badder, Pattern Perception, Corserine, Renude19 and more – have ably demonstrated this.
Random significant OYB events so far have included: Lauren Laverne premiering Lisa Moorish’s return to the fray after 20 years, her Sylvia Plath paean ’Sylvia’, on her BBC 6Music breakfast show; Third Bloom starring in the label’s first ever live showcase in Brighton; Scott Booth releasing an electronic music album made solely using his deft guitar work; David Holmes submitting a rare remix for the imprint; the Allen Ginsberg foundation granting permission for Renude19 to use the celebrated beat poet’s legendary Howl opus in their ‘Reimagining Allen Ginsberg’ album; Pattern Perception becoming a mainstay of Chris Hawkins’s BBC 6Music show, after he famously rechristened the Midlander “Dave from Birmingham” (PP is actually from Tipton, nine miles outside of Birmingham); Out Yer Box events featuring DJs such as EVL Tom, Mini Da Minx, Carl Loben, Sarah Monument, the Glitter Bosher, Drum Monkeys and more; Martin Badder & MARIA’s ‘No Two Ways About It’ being licensed for Laurent Garnier’s recent Fabric mix; and lots more.
